Canadian Language Benchmarks

The CLB assesses three areas of language ability: listening/speaking, reading and writing. Each of these skill areas has 12 levels of competency called Benchmarks which are grouped into 3 stages.

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) Initiative

Component of the Internationally Trained Workers Initiative. In 2003–2004, the Government of Canada announced funding for ELT. It provides higher levels of language training, including job-specific language training, to help immigrants and refugees find and keep work commensurate with their experience and skills.

LINC: The Government of Canada, in cooperation with local school boards, community colleges, as well as immigrant and community organizations, offers language training across the country. The LINC centres across Canada can assess your language training needs and refer you to LINC classes from benchmark levels 1 to 5. You can contact these LINC providers directly for more information. Remember to ask about fees, since some of these courses may not be free.
